			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Lametta</em> is a Christmas decoration found in German homes and in particular on Christmas trees.  Similar to tinsel, it is hung over the branches to simulate icicles.</p>
<p>Originally it was made from a substance called &#8220;Stanniol&#8221;, which is Tin (Sn) flattened to make it into a foil.</p>
<p>To add weight to the Lametta, lead or even silver were added.  Often this meant that it was used on New Year&#8217;s Eve for <a href="http://www.germanwordsexplained.com/blog/index.php/christmas/fondue-raclette-bleigiessen/" target="_self"><em>Bleigießen</em></a>.  However, modern Lametta is often made of plastic.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <em>Sandmännchen</em> is an animated figure in German childrens&#8217; television.  It is shown every day on KiKa (&#8220;Kinderkanal&#8221;) just before 7pm.</p>
<p>The <em>Sandmann</em> shown today is evolved from an East-German production, as can be seen by some of the buildings and clothing in the series.  The puppet arrives in the scene and introduces a short film to the children.  After the film he sends the children to bed by releasing sand (&#8220;Schlafsand&#8221;) and then leaves.</p>
